Asbestos Related Diseases

Anyone who is exposed to asbestos may develop an asbestos-related illness. These diseases usually affect the lungs and cause breathlessness, but occasionally they affect the lining of the abdomen.

Particularly at risk are those who were involved in shipbuilding or ship repair, the construction and demolition industries, or the manufacture of asbestos products.

It’s not just industrial work places – up until the 1980’s asbestos was present in pretty much every workplace, public building (including shops and schools) and even in domestic houses.

Common Afflictions related to Asbestos:

  • Mesothelioma – a form of cancer usually affecting the lining of the lungs
  • Asbestos-related lung cancer
  • Asbestosis – a non-malignant scarring of the lung tissue
  • Non-malignant pleural disease (diffuse pleural thickening and pleural plaques)
